The Internet was in shock Sunday as it learned of the sudden passing of pop music star George Michael

Michael passed peacefully at home over the Christmas holiday, the singer’s publicist said in a statement.

As fans of the musician worked through their grief on social media, many expressed their love by giving the singer of “Last Christmas” their hearts.

Madonna also expressed her feelings on Twitter and Instagram. “Farewell My Friend! Another Great Artist leaves us,“ she wrote in a post that concluded with an expletive for the year 2016. She accompanied her post with a clip from the 1989 MTV Awards when she came to the podium smoking a cigarette with two back-up smokers and presented Michael with the Video Vanguard Award.
