Soledad O’Brien joins Al Jazeera America

Soledad O’Brien is adding another new gig to her post-CNN roster. She’s joining Al Jazeera America as a special correspondent.

The Qatar-based news organization announced on Monday that O’Brien had signed a deal to provide short-form segments for the soon-to-launch channel’s prime time news magazine show “America Tonight.” Her company, Starfish Media Group, will also produce one-hour documentary programming.

This is the second high-profile deal O’Brien has announced since leaving her role as anchor of the CNN morning program “Starting Point With Soledad O’Brien.” Last month, HBO announced O’Brien was joining the reporting roster of the sports magazine show “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.”

In addition to both of her new jobs, O’Brien’s company is also expected to continue to produce occasional installments of her “Black in America” series for CNN.

The American off-shoot of Al Jazeera was announced in January when the company bought the cable channel Current TV. Another former CNN personality, Ali Velshi, is also part of the new channel.

It’s expected to launch on Aug. 24, 2013.
