‘Californication’ to end in 2014

Showtime’s sex-drenched comedy “Californication” will be coming to an end in 2014, with its 12-episode seventh season beginning in April.

David Duchovny stars in the series as womanizing writer Hank Moody, whose series of affairs is the source of constant trouble in his life. The role earned Duchovny a Golden Globe award for lead actor in a comedy series in 2008.

Taking a page from the conclusion of several other recent cable series, the final season of “Californication” has been “carefully planned” by creator Tom Kapinos, according to Showtime president of entertainment David Nevins.

Does this mean fans will pick it apart episode by episode, a la the final season of “Breaking Bad”? Probably not, but in a news release, Nevins did promise a “beautiful and satisfying conclusion for new and long-time fans alike.”

Despite the lighthearted nature of the series, it has not gone without some controversy. For a series known for abundant sex and nudity, it has raised a few eyebrows concerning just how frank it gets. Christian groups in Australia attempted to get the series banned when it premiered there because of a scene in the first episode involving Duchovny’s character performing a sexual act with a nun. The scene in question was just a dream sequence.

Duchovny’s real life and that of his characters seemed to run in parallel in 2008 when Duchovny checked himself into a rehab center for sex addiction.
