Jon Hamm, Daniel Radcliffe star in ‘Young Doctor’ series on Ovation

Don Draper and Harry Potter are teaming up? Not exactly, but actors Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe are appearing in the upcoming series “A Young Doctor’s Notebook,” set to premiere this summer.

The four-episode series, produced by the BBC and airing in the U.S. on Ovation, follows the exploits of a newly minted doctor as he undertakes his first job at a hospital in rural Russia during the revolution. The series is based on Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov’s short-story collection, “A Country Doctor’s Notebook,” which drew inspiration from Bulgakov’s real life experiences. (Bulgakov is most well known for writing the book “The Master and Margarita.”)

Hamm will play the show’s narrator, an older version of the doctor, addicted to opiates and looking back on his youth. Radcliffe will play the doctor in his younger days.

The program originally aired in the UK last year on the Sky Arts channel and drew the channel’s largest audiences to date, with 800,000 viewers, according to the Guardian.

The series was such a success that the channel’s director, James Hunt, told the British newspaper that they would be developing scripts for a second season in the hopes of finding time in Hamm and Radcliffe’s schedules to film them.

While Hamm’s schedule is filled with the AMC series “Mad Men,” which is currently airing its sixth season, Radcliffe has a burgeoning post-”Harry Potter” film career, with the dark fantasy thriller “Horns” expected to hit theaters this fall.
