Lifetime cancels ‘Army Wives,’ but fans will get some closure

“Army Wives” will not be back for an eighth season on Lifetime.

The network announced Tuesday that the series would end with season seven, which concluded in June.

However, the men and women of “Army Wives” will not be shipped off without one last hurrah for the fans. The series will wrap up with a two-hour retrospective special set to air early next year.

In a statement, Lifetime Executive Vice President and General Manager Rob Sharenow said, “There is no denying how special ‘Army Wives’ has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape. By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country.”

The series, which starred Catherine Bell, Wendy Davis and Brian McNamara, followed the lives of women and their families stationed at an army base in South Carolina.

It never garnered the basic cable buzz of a “Breaking Bad” or “Mad Men,” but the ABC Studios-produced series was distinguished by awards that weren’t Emmys. During its run, the series won two Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media and a Sentinel for Health Award from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism’s Norman Lear Center.
