Next Netflix series, ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ debuts in July
Netflix appears to be firing on all cylinders in 2013, with new original content coming every other month. Hot on the heels of “Arrested Development,” which returns with 15 new episodes on May 26, Netflix plans to premiere its next series, “Orange Is the New Black,” on July 11.
The new series, a comedic drama set in a women’s prison, was adapted by “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan from the bestselling memoir by Piper Kerman.
It stars Taylor Schilling as a young Brooklynite whose life gets turned upside down when her association with a drug runner causes her to end up in prison with a yearlong sentence. While there, she encounters a number of eccentric and outspoken inmates.
The cast also includes Laura Prepon, Jason Biggs, Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning.
Just like “House of Cards,” “Hemlock Grove” and “Arrested Development,” Netflix plans to release all 13 episodes on the same day.
The real-life Kerman served 15 months in a minimum security prison in 2004 and 2005 for laundering money for a drug dealer. Her book was based on that experience.
