Nickelodeon orders more ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’
Nickelodeon announced Tuesday that its revamp of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” has been picked up for a second season. This calls for a pizza, yes?
The writing was written on the sewer wall. Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello proved that shelled crusaders never go out of style with its mid-morning premiere on the network over the weekend. It ranked as the week’s top telecast with kids 2-11 (2.1 million -- more than half were boys) and was the No. 1 kids program on basic cable, with 3.9 million viewers for the week.
The storied franchise was a hit in the ‘80s and ‘90s -- and Nick was hoping the spirited reptiles hadn’t grown rusty. Viacom, which owns Nickelodeon, acquired the rights to the franchise three years ago for $60 million as part of its bid to find a new hit to keep the young viewers tuning in. The network, home to shows such as “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “iCarly,” saw its ratings drop considerably last year.
But hey, these guys can take on ninjutsu-loving Shredder -- ratings are a piece of cake.
Nickelodeon has ordered 26 additional episodes of the CG-animated version of the series. The episodes are slated to air next year.
