Yahoo officially welcomes Katie Couric to its team as ‘global anchor’

Is Katie Couric cutting the TV cord? Yahoo officially announced Monday that Couric is joining its ranks as its “global anchor.”

After more than three decades on the air as a journalist and talk show hostess, the 56-year-old will now add Internet explorer to her resume, helping to develop global coverage for Yahoo. As part of her new position, which is still being defined, Couric will conduct monthly interview series and serve as the “face” of Yahoo News.

The confirmation comes after word leaked late last week that she’d be jumping ship from ABC News for more digital pastures.

“Katie’s depth of experience, her intellectual curiosity, and her charisma make her the perfect choice to anchor Yahoo News and the whole Yahoo Network. Her unmatched energy, savvy, and versatility enables her to connect with audiences across the globe,” said Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. “News is a definitive daily habit for our users -- and Katie will work with our talented editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism.”

“It’s very exciting to be a part of a leading company at the intersection of content and technology,” Couric said in a statement. ”I have great admiration for Marissa Mayer and her team and their commitment to bringing news, entertainment and information to the Yahoo community across multiple platforms. Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they’re using and consuming media today.”

But will the new gig help her fine-tune her second screen skills? She’s said to take on the duties while continuing to host her syndicated daytime talk show. But Disney-ABC Domestic Television has not yet announced whether it will renew the syndicated show for a third season--some suspect it won’t go on.

Couric’s venture into the digital space — which had many scratching their heads, viewing it as a downgrade — follows a storied TV presence. She served as co-host of NBC’s “Today” for 15 years before leaving in 2006 to anchor “CBS Evening News.” Her time there drew its share of criticism; she ultimately departed in 2011. She’s also expected to negotiate an early exit from her deal with ABC News, where she took on the role of “special correspondent” (i.e. guest co-hosting “Good Morning America,” etc.) as part of a pact with Disney, which distributed her talk show.

Couric joins recent Yahoo editorial team additions: Megan Liberman, David Pogue, Matt Bai (all alum of the New York Times).
