Así fue el camino rumbo al campeonato del Mundo de Francia

MOSCÚ, RUSIA — ENTRE LOBOS. Francia clasificó a Rusia 2018 como primera del Grupo A de la eliminatoria de la UEFA, en un grupo en el que estaba también Suecia y Holanda. Suecia fue un equipo revelación en el Mundial ruso, además de eliminar a Holanda. En el grupo también estaba Bulgaria, tampoco un rival fácil. Pero el equipo de Didier Deschamps pasó sin problemas, con solamente un partido perdido, lo que demostró su estabilidad en una eliminatoria complicada.

ABURRE EN FASE DE GRUPOS. Los galos quedaron en el Grupo C del Mundial junto con Australia, Perú y Dinamarca, un sector apretado pero accesible para los galos. Francia tuvo dificultades pero venció a Australia en el debut en Kazán por 2-1 con un tanto de Antoine Griezmann y un autogol. Luego venció por la mínima diferencia a Perú, sin mostrar su mejor futbol. Ya clasificado, empató 0-0 ante Dinamarca en Moscú en un partido bastante aburrido pues los dos estaban en octavos.

MUESTRA SU PODERÍO. A nadie le interesa jugar ante Argentina un partido de eliminación directa, pero le tocó a Francia “bailar con la más fea” en octavos de final. El golpe de autoridad lo dio al vencer por 4-3 a la Albiceleste en un partido que parecía ser un “Clásico” pero que lo resolvió en 68 minutos. Angel Di María y Gabriel Mercado parecían que iniciaban una épica remontada cuando le dieron vuelta al marcador al inicio del segundo tiempo, lo que puso psicológicamente a prueba a los Galos. Pero con un golazo de Benjamín Pavard y dos tantos de Kylian Mbappé, resolvieron el asunto y mandaron a Lionel Messi y compañía a casa.

LA SUERTE A SU FAVOR. Llegó otro equipo sólido, y nuevamente otro de Sudamérica, en cuartos de final: Uruguay. La Celeste había ganado con autoridad su grupo, en el que había derrotado a Rusia por 3-0 en la fase de grupos y luego eliminó a Cristiano Ronaldo y compañía. Pero corrieron con la suerte de que los Celestes no contaban con Edinson Cavani, su mejor jugador lesionado ante Portugal. Pero con goles de Rafaphel Varane y Griezmann, más una zaga muy bien compacta, lograron los dos golpes sobre los Celestes.

PASO DECISIVO. El partido de semifinal en San Petersburgo fue quizás el más complicado para Francia, pues Bélgica era probablemente el que tenía mejor equipo en el torneo, así como individualidades de peso. Sufrieron para contener la ofensiva belga, pero a base de una tremenda defensa y atajadas claves del arquero Hugo Lloris, así como un gol oportuno de Samuel Umtiti, el cuadro galo avanzó a la final como el gran favorito.

GOLPES EN EL MOMENTO PRECISO. Francia se enfrentó a una Croacia que realmente no tenía mucho que perder y eso lo hacía muy peligrosa. Además, Croacia tenía un gran juego de equipo que hizo ver mal a varios equipos, como Inglaterra y Argentina. Pero Francia golpeó en el momento preciso y ganó 4-2 gracias a los latigazos de sus jóvenes jugadores.

PARA CONSIDERAR… El trabajo de Didier Deschamps, quien se unió a Franz Beckenbauer y Mario “Lobo” Zagallo en ganar títulos como jugadores y entrenadores, fue clave tras perder en la Eurocopa 2016 en su propia casa ante Portugal. De ese equipo que dejó ir el título en el verano de 2016 en el Stade de France, seis de ellos estuvieron en el equipo titular que grabaron su nombre con letras doradas en Luzhniki Stadium de Moscú.
