Toronto, Canada, Sept 14 (efe _epa) . — ‘The Journey is the Destination’, depicting the life of BritishKenyan photojournalist Dan Eldon, the latest movie by Canadian director Bronwen Hughes, was shown in a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Wednesday.
The film’s protagonist was portrayed by American actor, Ben Schnetzer, known as the gay rights activist Mark Ashton in the movie “Pride” in 2014, and who since became one of the most promising young actors.
Schnetzer perfectly performed the role of British photojournalist Dan Eldon who went documenting the miseries of war and famine in several African countries during the 90s. Eldon was stoned to death in Mogadishu at the age of 22 while covering the civil war in Somalia in 1993.
Although the critiques for Hughes’s directing were indifferent, her film is an example of the growing importance of female filmmakers at the TIFF as well as in movie industries in various countries.
During the screening of the FrancoBelgian horror film ‘Raw’ by French female director Julia Ducournau as part of the Midnight Madness program, two spectators fainted by the bloody images of cannibalism in the film and had to be attended by a medical team, as TIFF confirmed on Monday.
For example, of the five new feature films shown at the TIFF is this year, three have been directed by female directors: ‘Fine night’ by Maria Jose Cuevas, ‘The empty box’ by Claudia SainteLuce, and ‘Tamara and Catarina’ by Lucia Carreras.
It is the result of an effort by the organizers of the TIFF to make more room for women at the festival, which has become one of the favorite spots of the Hollywood industry, and the rest of the world to buy and sell products.
According to data from the organizers of the TIFF, which is considered one of the three most important festivals of world cinema, the proportion of films made by female directors has risen from 20 percent in 2014 to 24 percent in 2015.
TIFF also highlighted that 52 percent of the selectors who choose which films are to be shown are women.
