Agentes fronterizos supervisaban las largas filas de migrantes, y vigilaban a multitudes que aguardaban a ser procesadas por las autoridades de inmigración. En El Paso, Texas, migrantes colocados en fila aguardaban entre la tierra afuera de una puerta en el muro fronterizo.
En ciertos puntos a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México el viernes, multitudes de migrantes que agarraban bolsas con pertenencias o sostenían a niños de la mano aguardaban a solicitar asilo luego de que entraron en vigor nuevas normas estadounidenses para regular la inmigración. Y seguía llegando más gente.
Una restricción al asilo conocida como Título 42 que estuvo en vigor durante 3 años llegó a su fin, y fue reemplazada por esas nuevas normas impuestas por el gobierno del presidente Joe Biden.
Agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos se desplazan entre una multitud de migrantes que llevan días aguardando entre dos muros fronterizos para solicitar asilo, mientras deciden quién será el siguiente en ser procesado, el viernes 12 de mayo de 2023, en San Diego. Cientos de migrantes siguen esperando entre los dos muros, muchos de ellos desde hace días. Estados Unidos inició una nueva política de manejo de la inmigración a partir del viernes, poniendo fin a una medida que restringió el asilo durante tres años e implementando una serie de nuevas normas estrictas que el gobierno del presidente Joe Biden espera estabilizarán la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México y orillarán a los migrantes a solicitar ingresar vía internet desde el país en el que vivan, con lo que no tendrán que hacer el peligroso viaje hacia el norte.

Muchos migrantes a ambos lados de la frontera llevaban días esperando. En San Diego, una mujer que sostenía un bebé le enseñó un brazalete a un guardia fronterizo para decirle que estaba entre los que habían aguardado más.
Otras personas se asomaban a través de uno de dos muros fronterizos entre los que se encontraban. Un grupo de hombres se acurrucaba bajo frazadas térmicas que les fueron entregadas de emergencia. Y algunos niños se entretenían durante las largas horas pateando una botella de agua vacía en un partido de fútbol improvisado.

Y en la ciudad fronteriza de Matamoros, México, ubicada al otro lado del río Bravo (Rio Grande en Estados Unidos) frente a Brownsville, Texas, familias de migrantes seguían llegando con la esperanza de ingresar a Estados Unidos. Un pequeño grupo que había recibido aprobación de un organismo de beneficencia fue escoltado por agentes de inmigración mexicanos a través de un puente en dirección a territorio estadounidense.
