Rent the Runway opens a West Coast outpost; Co gets a Neiman Marcus shop-in-shop
Rent the Runway, a service that’s carved out a niche in the designer-dress rental business, has opened its first West Coast brick-and-mortar space at the Village at Westfield Topanga shopping center. Located on Level 1 of the center (between Planet Beauty and Everything But Water), the 1,500-square-foot space, which officially opened its doors Oct. 21, marks store No. 6 for the 7-year-old company, whose next-closest physical space is located in Las Vegas.
Whereas Rent the Runway’s high-end women’s apparel and accessories (which includes some 350 designer brands with Monique Lhuillier, Badgley Mischka and BCBG Max Azria, among the most popular) have long been available online, the new outpost allows potential renters to try a range of cocktail dresses, gowns, separates and jumpsuits before taking temporary custody of those selections as well as work with a dedicated stylist (by appointment only), grab something last minute and pick up, drop off or swap out items that have already been rented. Sizes range from 0 to 22, and rentals for either four- or eight-day periods, and a quick survey of the offerings online shows gowns available for as little as $35 (for a four-day rental of a black crepe Halston Heritage dress with an asymmetrical hem) and as much as $700 (for a blue chiffon Gabriela Cadena gown with a V-neckline and a side-slit skirt).

Co shop-in-shop opens in Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills
Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern’s L.A.-based women’s label Co has scored some dedicated real estate in Beverly Hills — thanks to a new 251-square-foot shop-in-shop inside Neiman Marcus. It’s a high-profile move for the brand that’s seen its presence with the high-end department store grow from two doors to 18 doors over the last 1½ years. And it’s an accomplishment all the more impressive considering that at just 5 years old, the luxury label is rubbing retail elbows on Level 3 with the likes of Altuzarra, Narciso Rodriguez and Derek Lam.
The new Co space, which opened late last month, was celebrated with an Oct. 20 party at the Dawnridge estate in Beverly Hills that was once home to designer and artist Tony Duquette. Guests (including a Co-clad Marisa Tomei) mingled among models styled by Neiman Marcus Senior Vice President and fashion director Ken Downing in a mix of fall 2016, resort and spring 2017 looks from Co accessorized with Duquette’s jewelry. At the event, label co-founder Kern called the shop-in-shop “a real honor” and hinted that more Neiman Marcus shops-in-shop could be on the horizon.
