Barely a week after it came down the runway at Paris Fashion Week, Nicolas Ghesquiere’s new collection for Louis Vuitton has already made its debut on the red carpet. And on Charlotte Gainsbourg no less, who as the daughter of actress Jane Birkin and singer Serge Gainsbourg is French fashion royalty.

Gainsbourg wore a head-to-toe look from Ghesquiere’s debut collection for the luxury brand at the Thursday night premiere of “Nymphomaniac: Volume I” in New York.

As his friend and muse, she’s the perfect poster girl for his new direction at Vuitton, where he took over from Marc Jacobs. And the leather pants, frilly blouse and sweater vest combo is cool alright, really cool. So are the caramel-colored ankle boots.

A bit casual for a premiere you say? Well, maybe. And maybe not. The outfit was certainly covered-up and prim compared with the steaminess of the film Gainsbourg was there to promote. And I like that contrast.

(A character poster for “Nymphomaniac” has the actors stripped naked, making faces as though they were having orgasms. The tag line? “Show us your ‘O’ face.”)

But back to Vuitton. It’s a great look, seasonally appropriate for New York -- and really a whole lot more believable than some of the poufy, slinky, barely-there costumes we see on the red carpet today, which don’t have much to do with modern life at all.

Score one for Ghesquiere (and Gainsbourg).
