Blue Bottle Coffee opens in Beverly Grove with coffee classes and grilled cheese
Blue Bottle Coffee is now brewing in Beverly Grove. The Oakland-based roaster opened a shop in the neighborhood Tuesday. This is Blue Bottle’s third location in Los Angeles; it also has outlets in Venice and the Arts District in downtown L.A.
Blue Bottle’s newest shop is on Beverly Boulevard at Sweetzer Avenue and is, as Blue Bottle’s shops tend to be, bright, spacious and minimal. Single-origin espressos are on the menu, as is an L.A.-specific espresso named Dandy (this was, as you may recall, a signature espresso from Handsome Coffee Roasters, which Blue Bottle acquired last year). Drip coffee is made via the pour-over cones that line the counter.
As for cold drinks — because no doubt you’ll want something on ice so long as it continues to be as hot as it’s been — try the roaster’s famed New Orleans-style iced coffee with chicory and cane sugar, or its Cascara Fizz, made with cascara tea and lemon.
To eat, cookies, brownies, shortbread and other assorted Blue Bottle baked goods are available. Unlike Blue Bottle’s other shops in L.A., the food options here don’t stop at the pastry case: You’ll also find an affogato made with ice cream from Sweet Rose Creamery, and a hot-food menu that includes various things on toast (thick Liege waffles and grilled cheese sandwiches).
After ordering, you can snag a prime spot at the standing counter in front of the pretty espresso machine and watch the baristas make your drink. Or perhaps wander into the seating area, where you can channel your inner Bartleby and grab a stool at a counter facing the shop’s brick wall. If you would prefer, there also is counter seating at a large glass window, where you can look out into the Beverly Boulevard traffic, as well as chairs around a large communal table.
In addition to making coffee, the shop also will host classes about coffee. This weekend’s classes, on topics such as Aeropress brewing and green coffee buying, already are mostly booked, but you still may be able to get on a waitlist. Sign up here.
In addition to getting its Beverly Grove shop up and running, Blue Bottle roaster plans to open a few more spots around town, including a cafe in Echo Park and another at the Bradbury Building downtown.
Blue Bottle’s Beverly Grove location is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
