Giant honey mushroom? It weighs 33 pounds

Giant honey mushroom? It could be. A large mushroom was found in the Yunnan province of China. The massive fungi weighs 33 pounds, according to Science World Report.

The 36-inch diameter mushroom may be an edible honey mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae), but no one’s biting just yet. It has 100 caps attached to the base of the stem and is a light gray color, but the exact species is yet to be determined.

The mushroom was discovered in an area of China known for its variety of mushroom species. The area, dubbed the “Mushroom Kingdom of China” produces more than 250 edible varieties including termite mushrooms (which grow inside termite nests), white jelly mushrooms, greenhead mushrooms and ganbajun mushrooms.

The mushroom is certainly huge, but not a record-breaker.

Last year, a Canadian man found an inedible mushroom that weighed 57.4 pounds. The world’s largest mushroom was discovered in 1998 in Oregon. That giant honey mushroom was approximately 2,400 years old and grew to 2,384 acres.

All this giant mushroom talk got us thinking. What could you make with a 33-pound mushroom? A giant mushroom pizza. Cream of mushroom soup for 50. Or maybe even a 33-pound mushroom burger. Here’s to hoping it’s edible!
