UFC’s Alistair Overeem tests positive for elevated testosterone

Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title contender Alistair Overeem tested positive for elevated testosterone levels at a surprise test conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission at a UFC news conference.

The repercussions are the jeopardizing of a heavyweight title fight between Overeem and champion Junior Dos Santos on May 26 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and a mandatory appearance before the commission in the near future at which the fate of his fighting license will be determined.

Overeem, a former K-1 kickboxing and Strikeforce mixed martial arts champion, had a breakthrough UFC debut in January, knocking out former champion Brock Lesnar in the first round.

Overeem was tardy in appearing for drug tests before the Lesnar fight, also jeopardizing it, before he submitted urine samples, Nevada commission Director Keith Kizer said.

Now, Kizer said he expects Overeem to ask for a “B” sample test after the first “A” sample was found to have grossly elevated T/E ratios beyond 10/1, which “indicates synthetic testosterone use,” Kizer said.

The “B” sample process could take a couple more weeks, Kizer said, and if it confirms the first test, Overeem would be unable to apply for a license in Nevada for one year, scrapping the May fight.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir put out a statement Wednesday asking to be considered for a bout with Dos Santos, who became champion by defeating Cain Velasquez by first-round knockout in November in Anaheim.

Mir is supposed to fight Velasquez on the May 26 card.

“I would be excited if given the opportunity to compete for the UFC’s heavyweight title,” Mir said. “It is a dream of mine to become the first three-time heavyweight champion in the UFC.”

UFC President Dana White has told reporters he’s upset about the Overeem positive. The UFC is gathering information and has no comment on the matter now.
