A series of Santa Ana wind-driven wildfires have destroyed hundreds of structures, forced thousands to flee and smothered the region with smoke in the past week. The Thomas fire, now the fifth-largest wildfire in modern California history, continues to rage and threatens the coastal enclaves of Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito.
