Apparent homeless man found shot to death in Riverside park
Police in Riverside are investigating the death of a man found shot in a city park where authorities believe he had been living.
Riverside police were called Thursday morning to La Sierra Park after receiving calls reporting a bloodied man found in the park, according to a statement from police.
Officers arrived to find the man had died, apparently of a gunshot wound.
The man has been identified as James Joseph Ercoli, 38, of Riverside. Investigators believe Ercoli was a transient and that he had been staying in the park at night.
Police said witnesses heard gunshots hours earlier Thursday, but when officers responded, they did not find any evidence that anyone had been shot.
Police have asked that anyone with information on the shooting to call Det. Michael Medici at (951) 353-7104 or Det. Greg Rowe at (951) 353-7136.
