A man died after being buried alive in sand while digging a 10-foot-deep hole at Francis State Beach in Half Moon Bay, officials said Tuesday.
The man, who was in his 20s, was standing in the massive hole about 5:30 p.m. Monday when it collapsed, completely covering him in sand, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
It took a search-and-rescue team and 30 firefighters from San Mateo County 35 minutes to dig the man out of the hole.
Paramedics were unable to revive the man, who died of his injuries, according to a CalFire statement.
