Los Angeles County supervisors filled one of several high-profile administrative vacancies Tuesday with the appointment of a new auditor-controller.
They selected John Naimo, who has served as acting auditor-controller since Wendy Watanabe retired in March. Watanabe had held the position since 2009.
Naimo has served as assistant auditor-controller since 2004. He will make a salary of $240,000 as head of the department. The vote to appoint Naimo was 4 to 0, with Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas abstaining.
The auditor-controller’s department monitors and administers the county’s $25-billion budget, including setting fiscal policies, overseeing the county’s payroll, apportioning property taxes, auditing county departments and vendors, and conducting fraud investigations.
Several other department heads have retired or announced plans to step down this year, with the highest-profile departure being that of county Chief Executive Officer William T Fujioka. Supervisors are still looking for a replacement for Fujioka, as well as for retired public health Director Jonathan Fielding.
They recently appointed former Treasurer-Tax Collector Mark Saladino to replace retired County Counsel John Krattli.
