Eureka, Calif., police investigating death of popular priest
Eureka, Calif., police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found inside a church rectory, the Eureka Times-Standard reported.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim, but Eureka Mayor Frank Jager identified him to the newspaper as the Rev. Eric Freed.
A police department representative could not be reached for comment.
According to the newspaper, Freed was discovered at the St. Bernard Church rectory Wednesday morning by a deacon. Freed may have been killed after a Tuesday evening Mass.
Freed was described as a popular priest who was also teaching at the religious studies department at Humboldt State University, the newspaper reported.
