Azusa police fatally shot a man Friday night after he turned toward officers with a handgun, authorities said.

The incident began when officers attempted to stop a suspected drunk driver around 9:30 p.m. in the 700 block of East Alosta Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver fled from officers, then stopped his vehicle and walked away with a handgun, according to a department news release. The suspect ignored orders from police before turning toward them with the handgun, authorities said.

An officer then opened fire, hitting the suspect several times in the torso, according to the department news release. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, authorities said. The shooting is under investigation.
