6 people rescued after canoe capsizes off Marina del Rey
Six people were rescued off Marina del Rey Tuesday evening after their outrigger canoe capsized in rough seas.
All were treated and later released after they were pulled from the water about 7:45 p.m., according to authorities.
The vessel overturned just outside the Marina del Rey breakwater, where winds blowing from 15 knots to 20 knots had created unsafe conditions, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
“The seas were confused, hazardous,” Deputy Bryan White of the Marina del Rey station told The Times.
Deputies from the station launched a 34-foot catamaran-style diesel rescue vessel. A Los Angeles County Fire Department boat and U.S. Coast Guard helicopter were also scrambled.
Some of the victims were suffering from hypothermia. All were treated at the Marina del Rey station and then released, according to authorities.
