A San Jose father accidentally left his baby in the car for hours before the child was found unconscious and eventually died, authorities said Thursday.

The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office will consider whether to file charges against the man, who has not been arrested.

He called authorities after returning to his car Wednesday following a day of work and finding his 9-month-old baby unconscious. Authorities would not say whether the baby was a boy or a girl.

Police said the man was supposed to take the child to a baby-sitter on the way to work but forgot.

The father parked his car on the street with the baby strapped in a car seat and went about his day until he came back to find the baby about 7:15 p.m. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Santa Clara County coroner’s officials declined to reveal any details about the child. San Jose homicide detectives were investigating the case and awaiting review by county prosecutors before making any arrests, department officials said.
