Uber to deliver free weddings in San Francisco over six-hour period
Uber will be delivering more than just passengers in San Francisco on Saturday as it attempts to play last-minute wedding planner -- for free.
For couples who log on to the popular ride-sharing service between noon and 6 p.m., Uber said it would not only ensure couples get a ceremony, but they will deck it out with flowers, candles and a violinist, according to the company’s website.
Newlyweds will then be whisked away for a free honeymoon, including flight and accommodations.
Representatives from Alaska Airlines and the booking service HotelTonight will work with couples to create a custom honeymoon package, essentially allowing them to fly anywhere the airline travels, Uber spokeswoman Eva Behrend said.
The “wedding-on-demand” service was created in celebration of the city’s Pride Week and the nuptial season, and is only being offered in San Francisco, where Uber has its headquarters.
“We’re thankful to be based in San Francisco, a city that recognizes love doesn’t have to look any certain way,” Uber said in announcing the service on its website. “In honor of Pride week, we’re celebrating the inclusive idea that love is love with something that lasts a lifetime.”
To get married, couples must have all necessary documents, photo IDs, their parents’ names and birthplace, and an officiant on hand.
To get the service, couples must open the Uber app between noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, select a wedding location, bring their friends and family, meet with an onsite notary to get their license, and then go through with the marriage.
