Man who died while being restrained by Whittier police is identified
Authorities say a man who died after losing consciousness while being restrained by police officers was a 27-year-old Whittier resident.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Sunday that Jonathan Andrew Salcido died at a hospital Thursday after being detained by Whittier police.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Caroline Rodriguez said officers responded to a home following reports of a man suffering from a mental illness who was refusing to go to a mental hospital.
The man, later identified as Salcido, had run away from the home by the time police arrived but was followed by a family member.
Rodriguez said when officers caught up with the man, he tried to jump over a fence.
She said as officers restrained and handcuffed the man, he passed out. He died at a hospital.
An autopsy is pending. The incident is under investigation.
