Balboa Pier reopens; no damage found after boat accident
The Balboa Pier has been reopened to visitors after engineers found no evidence of damage to its pilings caused by a boating accident.
Newport Beach police said the popular pier was reopened to the public around 9:45 a.m. Monday and that crowds of pedestrians and fishermen were soon enjoying Labor Day outings on the wooden structure.
The pier was closed Sunday night after a 55-foot-long private boat lost power and drifted into one of the pier pilings.
The boat’s passengers were rescued and no one was injured.
Engineers inspected the pier Monday morning and declared that it remained structurally safe, officials said.
