Democrat John Chiang has won the contest for California treasurer, defeating Republican Greg Conlon.

The treasurer is responsible for managing the state’s debt, such as selling bonds that fund major projects.

The campaign was one of the quietest statewide contests this year.

Conlon, a retired accountant, has never held elected office before, although he’s previously run for treasurer, the state Assembly and the City Council in Atherton, where he lives.

He lagged badly in fundraising while Chiang, who is finishing his second four-year term as California controller, accumulated more than $3 million in his campaign account.
