Gunman arrested in death of man praying inside Georgia megachurch

An ex-church employee suspected of killing a man leading morning prayers at a suburban Atlanta megachurch Wednesday was arrested hours after the shooting, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Floyd Palmer, a 52-year-old former employee of the World Changers Church, was taken into custody, Eric Heinze, a deputy with the service, said by telephone from Georgia. The arrest was carried out by a task force that included the Marshals and the Fulton County police, he said.

There were no other details immediately available about the arrest or possible motive, he said. Earlier, police had said Palmer was the suspect in the shooting at the church in College Park, Ga.

A gunman entered the church about 10 a.m. and opened fire on a group of about two dozen in the chapel. The volunteer leader of the prayer group, Gregory McDowell, 39, was killed in the attack, police said.

The shooter, described as armed and dangerous, fled in a black Subaru, police said.

The Rev. Creflo Dollar, founder of the 30,000-member megachurch, was not in the building at the time of the shooting.

Dollar, known as the prosperity minister for his teachings, is one of the most well-known African American ministers in the nation. He teaches that Christians should not be ashamed to be rich.
