Denver girl shot by her mother is improving but still critical
Almost a week after a Denver woman shot her three children and then committed suicide, family members clung to hope that the lone survivor -- a round-faced 2-year-old named Isabel -- would keep improving and get to leave the hospital.
Hospital spokeswoman Jenny Bertrand said Isabel was still in critical condition Tuesday, but Liliana Castro, the girl’s aunt, told the Denver Post that Isabel was out of a coma.
“This is very, very good news for us,” Castro said.
When police responded to a 911 call Wednesday morning, they found blood, three dead bodies and young Isabel. They rushed her to Denver Health Medical Center for emergency surgery.
At a news conference last week, a somber-faced Denver pediatric intensive care doctor described Isabel as being in “critically ill condition” and in a “deep coma.” The girl’s uncle spoke briefly.
“Being the brother of the person who caused this tragedy, I wish I could say or express in words a ‘sorry,’” he said. “But what’s done is done. Whatever reason drove her to this, it’s going to be in God’s hands. He will be the judge of her.”
According to a statement released by the Denver medical examiner’s office, Mayra Nunez, 23, fired several shots at her 4-year-old daughter, identified as Navaeh Morales, and one fatal shot at her 1-year-old, Eric Perez, before turning the gun on herself.
