Two boys found shot to death in Ohio home; no suspects sought

Authorities on Thursday were still investigating how two young boys were shot dead in their grandparents’ house in southern Ohio.

No suspects are being sought in connection with the deaths of Austin Wiseman, 12, and Blake Campbell, 9, Jackson County Police Chief Carl Eisnaugle said in a statement.

The boys’ grandparents discovered the their bodies Wednesday after the boys had been left home alone at the grandparents’ home in Jackson.

“Although the investigation is continuing, Jackson police are not searching at this time for any other persons who might have been directly connected to the incident,” the statement said.

Eisnaugle said Austin and Blake were half-brothers. They stayed with their grandparents because their mother, who lived next door, worked frequently, Jackson County Coroner Gregory P. Hawker told the Los Angeles Times.

That morning, Hawker said, there seemed to be no signs of trouble. The boys’ grandparents had talked to the boys on the phone about 10 a.m. after leaving for a doctor’s appointment.

“They were having breakfast, things were fine,” Hawker said.

About an hour and a half later, the grandparents came home and went upstairs to find both boys dead in Blake’s room, apparently of gunshot wounds to the head, Hawker said.

A .44-caliber revolver was recovered by investigators, but it has not been confirmed to be the one used in the shootings, Hawker said. Autopsies are being conducted by the Franklin County coroner’s office.

Hawker said police also were interviewing schoolteachers and a pediatrician about the boys and possible mental health issues.
