Letters: Fight superbugs? Go vegan.
Re “FDA to phase out antibiotic use by farms,” Dec. 12
Not giving antibiotics to healthy animals is a good first step, but not raising animals for food is an even better solution.
Antibiotic-free or not, meat tends to be high in cholesterol and saturated fat; much of it contributes to heart disease, cancer and other life-threatening conditions. And as long as farmed animals are raised in cramped, feces-filled factory farms, harmful superbugs will flourish.
It’s unlikely that factory farmers will voluntarily stop giving animals growth-promoting antibiotics, but everyone can choose to eat tasty vegan foods, which don’t naturally harbor harmful bacteria, rather than meat, eggs and dairy products.
