Letters: Venice for Venice’s cars
Re “Who gets to park in Venice?,” Editorial, June 12
My group welcomes The Times’ endorsement of overnight restricted parking for Venice residents. However, your recommendation for replacement on a one-for-one basis — for example, 700 replacement and exempted parking spaces, allowing just 700 resident permits — is off-base.
Venice’s land-use plan suggests a one-for-one replacement of street spaces that are committed to residents 24 hours a day, while the Venice overnight parking program going before the California Coastal Commission would cover only three hours, from 2 to 5 a.m. The program would leave these spaces unrestricted during the day, when visitor demand is highest.
By the Coastal Commission’s own estimate, there is practically no visitor demand between 2 and 5 a.m., just a couple dozen joggers, surfers, cyclists and anglers. Requiring the city of Los Angeles to make new parking available at considerable cost during the early morning window makes little sense.
