Readers React: Clinton’s unconstitutional immigration approach
To the editor: Appearing to me to be shamelessly pandering, Hillary Rodham Clinton claims that she would act unilaterally to provide a path to citizenship if Congress did not do so. While I am sympathetic to illegal immigrants, I note that Article I, Section 8 of our Constitution gives to Congress the power “to establish an uniform rule of naturalization.” (“Clinton calls for path to citizenship, countering GOP immigration views,” May 6)
It is disturbing when a president usurps an enumerated power of Congress simply because the president is not satisfied with congressional inaction. Congress, however ineffective it may be, retains its enumerated powers under the Constitution.
