Cost to drop on furry friends at Burbank Animal Shelter

Adoption fees for dogs, cats and rabbits will be discounted to $20 this weekend at the Burbank Animal Shelter, which is among the roughly 50 animal shelters throughout Southern California taking part in a national effort to get dogs and cats adopted into new homes.

The collaborative adoption campaign, known as “Clear the Shelters,” will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The discounted adoption fee covers vaccines, spaying or neutering and microchipping, said Stacie Wood, senior animal control officer for the shelter.

Those interested in adopting a pet will be screened, Wood said.

“We’re not just going to give them away,” she added.

Wood said the shelter staff works to match pets to the lifestyles of those adopting them, so someone who lives a laid-back lifestyle doesn’t go home with a “65-mile-an-hour” pet.

VCA Animal Hospital, a sponsor of the event, will provide a limited health guarantee and a gift bag with each pet adopted.

The shelter has animals of all ages, Wood said, though sometimes older cats and older, larger dogs are harder to place. However, they have benefits over puppies and kittens, she said.

“They’re already potty trained, they’re already leash trained, they’re not chewing,” she said.

Dog owners looking to add another pet to their menagerie should plan to bring the animal along, so shelter workers can observe how the animal gets along with the potential adoptee. In fact, Wood said, families looking to adopt should bring the whole family.

Rabbits are also an option, she said though they’re not ideal for everyone. They make good pets for people who live in apartment buildings and don’t want noise complaints for barking dogs. Like cats, rabbits can be litter trained, too.

“They’re smart,” Wood said. “They catch on.”

The adoption drive, sponsored by NBC4 and Telemundo 52, coincides with busy season for shelters when they are “filled to the brim” following the Fourth of July holiday, Wood said.

All adoptable pets at the Burbank Animal Shelter are listed on www.petharbor.com. The site showed 169 pets available for adoption in Burbank as of Monday afternoon.

The Pasadena Humane Society, which is also participating in the adoption campaign, had 245 pets available, according to the site. East Valley Animal Care and Control Center in Van Nuys, another participant, had more than 350 animals listed.

Due to limited parking at the Burbank Animal Shelter, located at 1150 N. Victory Place, visitors on Saturday will be directed to park at the site of the former Great Indoors store, located nearby at 1301 N. Victory Place. A shuttle will transport people between the lot and the animal shelter.
