A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend during a fight in Burbank last month, police said.
Police arrested Daniel Johnson of Sun Valley during a traffic stop around 4 p.m. in the area of Hollywood Way and Keswick Street, during which police recognized the man as the possible suspect in the stabbing incident and discovered an outstanding warrant for his arrest, said Burbank Police Officer Cindy Guillen.
The woman’s 25-year-old boyfriend was leaving his girlfriend’s home around 9 or 10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Jackson Street on Aug. 29 when he was reportedly confronted by Johnson, who pulled out a sharp object, Guillen said.
The pair began fighting, and afterward the victim noticed that his shirt was wet, Guillen said. When he lifted up his shirt, he realized he’d been stabbed in the stomach.
Johnson and the 22-year-old woman have a 3-year-old son, who lives with his mother in her Jackson Street home. The woman and her son were inside the home when the incident occurred.
After the stabbing, the victim made it to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center without calling authorities, where hospital staff determined that he needed surgery, and he was transported to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Guillen said.
Meanwhile, hospital officials reported the incident to police.
The victim, who spent seven days in the hospital, initially told police that the stabbing occurred outside a party in Sun Valley, out of fear of the suspect, which prompted Los Angeles police to handle the initial investigation, Guillen said.
The case was handed over to Burbank police on Sept. 4 after Los Angeles detectives discovered the incident actually happened in Burbank.
What prompted the fight was not immediately known, but Guillen stressed the incident was not a random act.
Johnson is being held in lieu of $1-million bail and is due in court this coming week.
