Bethel No. 208

installs officers

Shanna Michelle Fickentsher will turn over the gavel, crown and cape

to Jocelyn Rachelle Diel who will be installed as honored queen of Job’s

Daughters Bethel No. 208 at 7:30 tonight at the Masonic Lodge, 248 E.

Olive Ave. The public is invited to attend the celebration themed “Love

is the Fire that Kindles the Heart.”

Other officers to be installed are Niaree Gooly Hopelian, senior

princess; Valaria Jean Foster, junior princess; and Joanna Renee Diel,

marshal.

Appointive officers are Erika Osrander, chaplain; Kati Solis,

treasurer; Shanna Fickentsher, librarian; Nina Trombi-Shein, recorder;

Annie Dorgan, first messenger; Allison Acord, second messenger; Jackie

Hollier, third messenger; Jennifer Green, fourth messenger; Melinda

Foster, fifth messenger; April Hartoon, senior custodian; Vanessa Wilson,

junior custodian; Tiffany Conant, inner guard; and Jennifer Hansen, outer

guard.

Serving on the Bethel Choir are Allison Cabrera, Catherine Colegrove,

Kimberly Conant, Stephanie Hansen, Tawna Hess and Sarah Shaffer.

Cynthia Wolcott is Bethel guardian. John Wolcott is associate Bethel

guardian. Patricia Mosier is grand deputy.

The evening will include a ceremony that continues until 9 followed by

refreshments and dancing to music played by a disk jockey. The event is

semi-formal.

Job’s Daughters is a service and social Masonic organization open to

young women 11 to 20. Some of the philanthropic projects sponsored by the

group are collecting pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, raising

funds for the Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment Fund (HIKE), decorating the

Burbank Rose float, contributing food and toys to the Holiday Baskets

program and making gifts for the Eastern Star retirement home.

Retiring honored queen, Shanna Fickentsher, this year included an

auction to raise money for the group’s projects and they also served

dinners to Masonic groups. She is captain of the Bethel’s drill team that

will compete when the girls go to Sacramento for the state convention in

late June.

Jocelyn Diel, drill team assistant captain, looks forward to an active

term with beach trips, camping, swim parties, a fund-raising dinner in

the fall, car wash, tree planting and decorating the Rose float.

Beastly Ball raises funds

for zoo education, expansion

The 30th annual Beastly Ball to raise funds for the Los Angeles Zoo is

scheduled for Saturday, June 17, at the zoo. Guests will dress in safari

attire for the event that begins at 6 p.m.

Honorees are Roy A. Anderson, chairman emeritus of Lockheed Corp. and

former chief executive officer of The Weingart Foundation, Jim Fowler and

Lotsie Busch Webster.

Anderson is being recognized for his many philanthropic contributions

to the zoo. Fowler is receiving the Fellow Award for his lifetime

commitment to the conservation and preservation of the world’s wildlife.

Webster is being honored for her volunteer efforts at the zoo. She a

former volunteer president of GLAZA, the Greater Los Angeles Zoo

Association.

“Building Blocks for the Future” is the theme and dinner will feature

specialties from such restaurants as Crocodile Cafe-Glendale, El Cholo,

Arroyo Chop House and others.

The creativity of Los Angeles designers and artists will be showcased

in silent auction displays leading to Zoo Meadow. Talents include Ted

Baker, Harry Carmean, Jarrett Hedborg, Jeffrey Hiner, Paula

Lechman-Testa, Maude MacGillivray, Merle Sheridan-Mardigian and Vadim

Valikovski.

Silent auction items include a box at the Hollywood Bowl for an

evening and a day on the set of “ER” plus emergency room “scrubs”

autographed by cast members.

Festivities include music by African drum ensemble, Abalaye, and a

live auction emceed by Los Angeles Zoo commissioner and actress Betty

White, an avid animal lover.

Some of the live auction items are a behind-the-scenes visit with the

zoo’s internationally famous baby chimpanzees, Jean, Jake and Zoe, and a

private tour of the zoo nursery.

Other bidding items are An Evening at the Zoo with Betty White Ludden;

a trip for two to Venice on Delta Airlines business class; and a trip to

Bali on Malaysian Airlines business class and a five-night stay at the

Four Seasons Resort. Also on the list is a chance to visit and name zoo

animals including the Steller’s sea eagle and a baby alpaca.

GLAZA is sponsoring the dinner with proceeds going to capital

improvements, animal acquisitions, scientific research and education.

The Beastly Ball provides additional support for the zoo’s education

commitment to the children of the community and to the Zoo Master Plan to

rebuild the zoo.

Over the past year, GLAZA’s docent outreach programs served more than

10,000 children in addition to free educational tours provided daily to

hundreds of kids. More than 400,000 children explored the zoo’s

interactive exhibits and attended the animal shows.
