Kiwanis and BUMP acting like Real Friends

Karen Hubbard

The Burbank Kiwanis and the Burbank United Methodist Players (BUMP)

invite your support of a fund-raising concert, Real Friends, to be held

at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 11 in the sanctuary of the Burbank First United

Methodist Church, 700 N. Glenoaks Blvd.

All proceeds will benefit the brother, wife and son of Burbank Kiwanis

member Brooks Gardner. Kim Gardner, who lives in Illinois, has been

battling cancer for seven years. His wife has now taken a leave of

absence from her job to care for her husband.

A suggested donation of $15 includes the concert, a dessert reception

and one chance in a drawing for some great prizes.

For information and reservations, call 841-0138, leaving a message

along with a number where you can be reached. Tickets are also available

at the church office.

At a recent meeting of the Burbank Kiwanis, the club recognized and

honored several Burbank teachers. According to Teacher Recognition

Washington Elementary; Ruth Mottern, Emerson Elementary; Angela D’Mello,

William McKinley Elementary; Jill Sullivan, John Burroughs High School;

Ellen Kessler, Jordan Middle School; and Martha Hankins, Robert Louis

Stevenson Elementary.

Congratulations to all of these fine educators.

school graduates when they start college in the fall.

Ritch, first vice president; Craig Adams, second vice president; Gene

Boyd, secretary; and Tom Engman, treasurer.

Shakey’s Pizza in Burbank. A percentage of the food sales benefited the

club.

club: J. J. Weston, Brenda Lantieri, DeAnn Archer and Grace Farenbaugh.

The initiation took place at the club’s annual general meeting at the

At the same meeting, officers for the coming club year were installed.

Julie Modglin will serve a second term as president; Nickie Bonner, first

vice president; Elaine Paonessa, second vice president and membership

chairwoman; Holly Zinman, recording secretary; Marilyn Mauzey, treasurer;

and Lisa Matzner, corresponding secretary. Directors include Mary Lou

The Burbank/Magnolia Park Optimist Club held its Annual Scholarship

Awards Breakfast Tuesday at DeBell. The club was set to award six $500

scholarships to six Burbank students. I will have more details in my next

column as my deadline comes before the meeting starts.

W. Giblin of the Burbank Elks announces that at the state convention

-- held in Palm Springs -- Burbank resident John Holt was named to the

state presidency of the California-Hawaii Elks. Giblin says this is a

first for Burbank Elks and an extremely high honor for Holt.

Giblin also says the Elks is now a coed national service club. In

fact, the Burbank Elks currently has a woman serving as an officer and

who will be Exalted Ruler within the next two years. Many Elks

organizations boast that 50% of their members are women.
