Shirley Temple’s first husband dies

BURBANK -- John Agar, who married Shirley Temple in 1946, died Sunday
at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 81.
The couple’s four year marriage produced a daughter, Linda Susan.
Agar, a World War II veteran, was signed to a movie contract after
marrying Temple, and appeared in movies with her and John Wayne.
Agar also had small roles in TV shows and sci-fi movies, and he was a
pitchman for Brunswick’s Senior Bowling program. Additionally, he worked
as an insurance salesman.
Agar’s wife, Loretta, to whom he had been wed for 46 years, died four
years ago. He is survived by adopted sons, Martin and John Agar III;
daughter Linda Susan; brothers Frank and Jim Agar, and four
grandchildren.
Private military services are Friday at Riverside National Cemetery.
