Santoro’s celebrates 50th anniversary helping BTAC

To commemorate Santoro Submarine Sandwiches’ 50th anniversary in Burbank, the business will roll back the prices of its sandwiches on Nov. 4 while raising funds for Burbank Temporary Aid Center.

Santoro’s is at 1423 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank.

All sandwiches will be 50 cents each that day and all proceeds from sales that day will be donated to the center, said Sal Palilla, owner.

The specially priced sandwiches will be served, one per customer, from 10 a.m. until the they run out. Free commemorative 32-ounce cups will be available to the first 1,000 customers. Commemorative shirts and hats will also be for sale.

“Santoros’ has been a landmark in Burbank for 50 years and we are so happy they have chosen to support BTAC as they celebrate this milestone,” said Barbara Howell, executive director. “It shows how truly committed they are to giving back the Burbank community.”

Governor’s liaison will speak to business women

The Verdugo-Glen Chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn. will present Karen Kukurin as the guest speaker at its meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Elks Club at 120 E. Colorado in Glendale.

Kukurin is deputy director and community liaison for the office of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. She was appointed in 2004 by the governor and is his eyes and ears here in Los Angeles. She acts as a conduit between the community and Sacramento.

Before joining the governor’s staff, she served as vice president of communications for The Employers Group, overseeing legislation and legal advocacy programs for one of the nation’s human resources employer associations.

She was the first woman vice president in the association’s 100 year history.

Kukurin’s presentation will include the role women have played in California’s history, what the governor and first lady have done to enhance the status of women, and a user-friendly overview on the largest infrastructure bond package ever proposed, which is on the November ballot.

Underutilized resources is topic at genealogical meeting

Underutilized genealogy resources is the topic of speaker Norma Storrs Keating at the next meeting of The Immigrant Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at the headquarters, 1310 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank,

Case studies will be used to illustrate several hidden and under-used resources that can yield valuable information when it seems there is nothing else to find.

Emblem Club #86 celebrates 64th birthday on Thursday

The Burbank Emblem Club #86 will celebrate its 64th birthday on Thursday at the Burbank Elks Lodge #1497, 2232 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank.

President Ramona Higgins and members of the club will honor all the past presidents at the event co-chaired by past presidents Lee Addessi and Cookie Bentevegna.

The Burbank Emblem Club is part of the Supreme Emblem Club of the United States of America, and was formed 64 years ago to assist the Burbank Order of Elks #1497 to perform charitable acts in the community and to bear allegiance to the flag and the constitution of the United States.

Some of the charities that the Burbank Emblem Club #86 supports are local high-school scholarships, Salvation Army, Burbank Corps, and Burbank Temporary Aid Center, Burbank Family Service Agency, Foothill Service Club for the Blind, Ronald McDonald House, Scholarships for Teachers of the Hearing Impaired, The State Hearing Dog Program, and others.
