CdM star wins PCL crown
LAKE ELSINORE — Corona del Mar High sophomore Mike Moorhead won the Pacific Coast League individual championship in boys’ golf after shooting a two-day total of seven-under-par 137 (69-68) on the par-72 course at the Links at Summerly Tuesday.
Moorhead, as well as teammates John Davenport and Jono Keedy, qualified for the CIF Southern Individual Regional May 17 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.
The league’s top six qualified for CIF. Davenport finished third (72-73 — 145) and Keedy was fifth (74-76 — 150).
CdM’s Josh Starnes finished ninth (73-80 — 153), Brian Mull was 11th (74-81 — 155) and Steve Bruno was 16th.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Newport Harbor 6, San Clemente 4 NEWPORT BEACH — Taylor Cordeiro and Amanda Olevsky scored two goals each Tuesday to help the Sailors advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I Championships.
Newport Harbor (12-8), the No. 7 seed, plays against No. 2-seeded El Toro at Los Alisos Middle School in Mission Viejo Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Madeline Storch and Chelise Delameter had one goal each, while Sierra Michaelsen and Stephanie Storch both added an assist each for the Sailors. Newport Harbor goalie Paige More had 14 saves.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
CdM def. San Juan Hills SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The Sea Kings clinched the Pacific Coast League title, remaining undefeated in league after a 25-13, 25-15, 25-16 win Tuesday.
Weston Nielsen had 11 kills, Brennan Andersen had eight kills and Parker Brown had 14 assists for CdM (18-8, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.
Newport Harbor def. Marina NEWPORT BEACH — Rusty Sary had 10 kills to help lead the Sailors to a 25-10, 25-15, 25-15 Sunset League win Tuesday.
Austin Bagby and Will Connelly had eight kills each, while Cody Caldwell had seven kills for Newport (16-8, 7-2 in league).
Zack Martin had five kills, Jackson Carmack amassed 29 assists and Connor Curry had two aces and seven digs for the Sailors, who close out league play at Edison (6-3 in league) Thursday.
Newport Harbor is in second, trailing Esperanza (8-1 in league), which plays host to Fountain Valley Thursday.
Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Lightning remained in position to capture a share of the Academy League title with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-13 triumph over host Brethren Christian at Liberty Christian High on Tuesday.
Mattias Russo-Larsson had 10 kills, five digs and three aces to pace the Lightning (15-9, 8-1 in league).
Sage plays host to league-leading St. Margaret’s Thursday at 5:30 p.m. With a victory, the Lightning would share the league crown with the Tartans. St. Margaret’s swept their first league meeting on Feb. 20.
Chris Zadra had seven kills, while freshman Kent Kawaguchi had 10 assists and six kills for Sage Hill, which is ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division V coaches’ poll. St. Margaret’s shares the top ranking with Salesian.
BOYS’ GOLF
Orange Coast League finals LONG BEACH — Estancia High sophomore Jake Knapp shot five-under-par 67 Tuesday to claim a four-shot lead after the first day of the two-day, 36-hole tournament at Skylinks Golf Course.
Ryan Burns (78) is sixth for the Eagles.
Newport Harbor 195, Edison 211 HUNTINGTON BEACH — Mychael Clark shot one-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors and help the Sailors to a share of the Sunset League title Tuesday at SeaCliff Country Club.
Marcus Kiel, Zach Eddy and Ericson Klein each shot 39, while Travis Russell carded a 41 for Newport (16-4, 8-2 in league).
The Sailors will compete in the Sunset League individual finals, which take place today and Thursday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.
BASEBALL
Sage Hill 13, Brethren Christian 1 NEWPORT COAST — Five players had two hits and at least one run for the Lightning in the Academy League game Tuesday
Darren Hardy led the way for Sage Hill (13-5, 10-2 in league), as he went two for four with two runs and three runs batted in.
Sean Vogel, Dusty Orrantia and A.J. Wolfson each went two for four with an RBI, while Mo Kreitenberg was three for four with two runs and an RBI. Michael Yorita had a triple and an RBI.
San Juan Hills 4, Corona del Mar 3 SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The Sea Kings couldn’t score with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning of the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.
A double play ended the inning for CdM (9-14, 6-6 in league), which had a runner out at home and then at first. The Sea Kings nearly rallied from a 4-1 deficit after six innings.
Brett Lawson had a double and a run batted in, while Michael Borchard, Chase Carlile and Clark Cashion delivered one hit each for CdM, which plays host to San Juan Hills Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Laguna Beach 7, Estancia 1 LAGUNA BEACH — The Eagles were held to four hits and gave up 10 in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.
Victor Trujillo was two for three with a run batted in for Estancia (14-9, 6-3 in league), which plays host to Laguna Friday at 3:15 p.m.
