Sailors tandem win title

SEAL BEACH — Newport Harbor High junior Jason Cernius and sophomore Troy Arnold defeated fellow Sailors Craig McKennon and Greg Brostek, 1-6, 6-4, 10-6, to win the Sunset League doubles title Thursday at Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Both teams advanced to the CIF Southern Section Individuals May 21.

Cernius and Arnold, the No. 2-seeded team that is now 23-5, beat No. 6-seeded Marina’s Jason Fernandez and Toma Harmilek, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, in the semifinals.

In the other semifinal, the No. 4-seeded McKennon and Brostek, both juniors who are now 24-7, defeated the top-seeded Marina team of B.K. Fernandez and Roy Nielson, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 12, Tesoro 2 CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Ryan Mix scored four goals to help the top-seeded Sea Kings advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Southern Section Division I Championships Thursday.

Senior Randall Nelson added two goals. Seniors Daniel Noto, Blake Burkhart and Reed Wallace added one goal apiece, while junior Parker Ewles and sophomores Michael Keasey and Michael Ortlieb also added one goal each.

CdM’s defense led by seniors J.D. Abbott and Alex Mainthow and junior Donald Dalton was dominant the entire game.

CdM (18-2) will play against No. 4-seeded Los Alamitos Saturday at 5 p.m. at San Clemente High.

The Griffins defeated No. 5-seeded Santa Mararita, 7-6, Thursday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Pacific Coast League finals IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s No. 2-seeded doubles team of Shane Korber and Ryan Peyton advanced to the CIF Southern Section Individuals May 21.

Korber and Peyton lost to top-seeded Reo Asami and Ryan Cheung of University, 6-4, 6-2, in the final Thursday at Irvine High. The CdM duo beat University’s Tyler Lu and Reo Shimizu, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, in the semifinals.

CdM’s Alex Murray and Carter Wheatley won the third-place match, beating Lu and Shimizu, 9-7.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Edison HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Cody Caldwell had 23 kills, eight digs and four aces to pace the Sailors’ 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23 Sunset League victory that wrapped up second place in league Thursday at Edison High.

Rusty Sary had 15 kills and 12 digs, while UCLA-bound setter Jackson Carmack had 49 assists for the winners (17-8, 8-2 in league).

Zack Martin added 10 kills and Will Connelly chipped in nine.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I, plays host to No. 2-ranked Corona del Mar tonight at 6:15 in the annual Battle of the Bay.

Corona del Mar def. Beckman IRVINE — Joey Booth had 10 kills to help the Sea Kings finish undefeated in the Pacific Coast League after a 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 win Thursday

Weston Nieslen had nine kills, Parker Brown had six kills and 19 assists and Evan Dean, John Christian and Spencer Haly had five kills each for CdM (19-8, 10-0 in league). Nick Curci had 17 assists and Brennan Andersen had five digs for the Sea Kings, who play at Newport Harbor tonight at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Esperanza 13, Sage Hill 11 NEWPORT COAST — Hayden Furey had five goals and Alayna Lewis added three for the host Lightning in the Sunset League game Thursday.

Sage Hill finishes the season 2-15, 1-7 in league.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League finals NORWALK — Newport Harbor High junior Ryan Andrews won the shot put with a mark of 56 feet, 11 inches Thursday at Cerritos College.

Steven Vayda was second in the high jump for the Sailors, for whom Mark Sakioka was fourth in the pole vault (15-1).

Jake Taylor was fourth in the shot put (53-9) and Max VanBergh was sixth in the pole vault (14-1). Both qualified for the CIF Southern Section preliminaries.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League finals NORWALK — Newport Harbor High’s Melissa Hancock won the high jump with a mark of five feet, two inches and was second in the long jump (15-11 1/2 ) to pace the Sailors.

Freshman Maggie Hancock won the 3,200 meters in 11 minutes, 21.17 seconds.

Gwen Gaylord was third in the 100 in 12.89 and Allison Krugman was third in the pole vault (10-8).

Shanay Fischer was fourth in the 400 with a personal record of 1:00.53.

BOYS’ GOLF

Sunset League finals CHINO HILLS — Newport Harbor High junior Zach Eddy finished seventh with a 36-hole total of six-over-par 152 Thursday at Los Serranos Golf Course.

Eddy earned the last guaranteed berth in the CIF individuals.

Sailors teammates Travis Russell, a senior, and Marcus Kiel, a junior, tied for eighth (153), and Turner won a seven-hole playoff to become the league’s first alternate for the CIF individuals.

Corona del Mar 180, Aliso Niguel 182 ALISO VIEJO — Nick Matthews’ hole-in-one highlighted the Sea Kings’ nonleague win Thursday at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Matthews used a nine iron on the par-three, 150-yard No. 7 hole for his ace. He shot a three-over-par 38, as did teammate Jono Keedy.

Brian Mull shot one-under 34, the low for CdM(19-1). Mike Moorhead shot a 35 and Josh Starnes and John Davenport both carded a 38.
