The Who singer to step in at OC Fair

Roger Daltrey, longtime lead vocalist of The Who, has stepped in to replace a band that had featured the late Ray Manzarek at this year’s OC Fair concert series.

Daltrey, whose rough-and-ready voice carried “Baba O’Riley,” “My Generation” and other radio staples, will perform a charity show Aug. 10 for Teen Cancer America. The performance at the Pacific Amphitheatre replaces a previously scheduled one by former Doors members Manzarek and Robby Krieger and vocalist Dave Brock.

Manzarek, the Doors’ organist, died in May at age 74. Over the last decade, he and guitarist Krieger were common performers at the fair. In 2003, Daily Pilot reviewer Daniel Stevens described their show as “two hours of some very good rock ‘n’ roll played by two old rockers enjoying what they were doing.”

Manzarek also joined other veteran rockers in a 2009 music festival paying tribute to the Golden Bear, a beloved Huntington Beach venue that closed a quarter-century ago.

Tickets for the Daltrey show go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday through Ticketmaster or the OC Fair & Event Center Box Office. Those who have bought tickets for the Manzarek show must request refunds from their original point of purchase; the tickets will not be accepted for Daltrey’s performance.
