CRYSTAL COVE STATE PARK

Crystal Cove State Park, 8471 N. Coast Hwy, has 3.5 miles of beach and 2,000 acres of undeveloped woodland. $15 day-use parking fee.

Historic District Walk: 10 a.m. Saturday. Take a walk through the renovated 12-acre Historic District at Crystal Cove State Park. Learn about the colorful past of the Cove and hear about the different uses for each cottage. Meet at Los Trancos parking lot at the trailer (PCH turn inland at stoplight Los Trancos.) $15 day-use parking fee.

Backcountry Hike: 9 a.m. Sunday . Enjoy a guided autumn 3-5 mile backcountry hike. Meet at El Moro Visitor Center (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park.) $15 day-use parking fee

Earthquake Talk: 7 p.m. Thursday. Join Saddleback College Geology Prof. Merton Hill for an evening talk and slide presentation about “Earthquakes in Southern California.” Meet at cottage No. 34 in the Historic District next to the Reservation Office. Park in the Los Trancos lot (PCH inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk across the street or take the shuttle.)

LAGUNA COAST WILDERNESS PARK

Rangers staff the park daily. Open 7 a.m. to sunset daily, including holidays. Parking lot hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Native Plant Hike: 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Learn to identify native plants with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist Nadine Nordstrom (author of the South Coast Wilderness Plant Identification Guide) on this moderate, but steep and rocky, 3.5-mile hike. For ages 12 and up. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (east side of Laguna Canyon Rd/SR-133, just north of 73 Toll Road). Reservations required by calling (949) 923-2235. Parking: $3. Donation: $2/person.

Weekends at the Nix Nature Center — American Indian Toys and Games: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Join the talented Acjachemen performer, Jacque Nunez, as she transports you into the traditions of the Acjachemen people–and into the world of our shared past. Make your own Acjachemen toys and games to take home or give as gifts for the holidays. Reservations required by calling (949) 923-2235. Parking is $3.

Geology Hike: 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday. Enjoy unspoiled canyon views and learn about the geology of this area on this strenuous, 3.5-mile hike (700 ft. elevation gain) over steep and uneven terrain. Led by Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalists. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Willow Canyon Staging Area (20101 Laguna Canyon Road, just south of El Toro Road intersection). Reservations required by calling (949) 923-2235. Parking is $3. Donation is $2 per person.
