‘Founding Mothers’ talk is Sunday

Historian Glenna Matthews will speak on “Founding Mothers” on Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach, 429 Cypress Drive, to recognize the 90th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States.

Matthews’ family lived in Laguna Beach when her father was an editor, first at the South Coast News and then at the Laguna Beach Post. She graduated from Laguna Beach High School. Her family moved away, but she returned to build a house on a lot her family acquired when they lived here. She has resumed an active role in Laguna affairs.

She has a long interest in the contributions of American women to our culture, and has written several books on the subject, including “The Rise of Public Woman” and “Just a Housewife: The Rise and Fall of Domesticity in America.” Her latest book, “The Golden State in the Civil War” is being readied for publication.
