Captured moments on display at airport
As a lawyer, Jennifer McGrath’s world can be a little black and white.
The city attorney for Huntington Beach brings color into it with her photography, which is on display in the Thomas F. Riley Terminal at John Wayne Airport.
McGrath’s photographs are part of the airport’s Community Focus Space Program, which displays works from artists who have some bond with Orange County and is changed every four weeks, said JWA spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.
Her photographs, which will be on display through March 20, are located on the departure level of terminals A, B and C and at carousels 1 and 4.
“It’s an unexpected place to display art,” she said. “It’s something different for the passengers. It’s like bringing in a little museum to them.”
She focused on taking pictures that couldn’t be captured twice and tried to capture surreal landscapes from different locations around the country while she and her family were on vacation during the past few years.
Some photos include a snow-covered waterfall in Yosemite National Park, the jagged hoodoos at Bryce Canyon in Utah and a little boy chasing pigeons on the Huntington Beach Pier.
“Everybody has a picture of Half Dome and the Grand Canyon, but we try and put things together with a little different perspective to kind of make you think,” McGrath said.
For McGrath, taking photos while on vacation is a form of relaxation from the daily grind of work.
“It’s a centering or focus; being able to get out of this stress,” she said. “And my kids are 11 and 12, so getting to see the world from their eyes is interesting.”
With five years of photography under her belt, McGrath is still seeking out different locations to photograph.
McGrath said she and her family have stayed relatively local, traveling to Utah, Arizona and around California, but she wants to expand her horizons.
“I want to go farther than that, but so far we have material within an hour of the house,” she said.
