Stay entertained this summer
Summer is here, and with the help of the Newport Beach Public Library, you will never be bored! Escape the summer sun by enjoying one of the many available entertainments provided to you by the library for free.
To start, be sure to pick up a good book to read (I’m a librarian; I can’t help but think of books first!). The library has regular resources available for your enjoyment; check out our special events and programs specifically for summer. The summer reading programs for adults, teens, and children have started with full force. Signups for these programs are taking place at all library locations today! Additionally, you may sign up online at https://www.newportbeachlibrary.org. On the website you may also check the status of materials, view special summer events happening weekly at the library, and find great movies to watch, curled up inside your cool air-conditioned home on days when the sun is too hot to handle.
The following summer-themed films are just what you need to keep you and your family entertained. Many of these movies will bring laughs, and will help you get ready to hit the beach, attend summer camp, or make new friends. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
There are several options when it comes to the classic movie “The Parent Trap.” Two long-lost twins who meet at summer camp come up with a plot to reunite their divorced parents. The original movie stars Hayley Mills, and the remake features a young Lindsay Lohan.
“The Bad News Bears,” starring Walter Matthau, tells the tale of a baseball team. The coach (Matthau), a former baseball minor leaguer, has his work cut out for him. The team is made up of a bunch of misfits with no talent. And to top it all off, the best player is a girl!
James Earl Jones plays the role of Mr. Mertle, an angry junkman who owns a terrifying guard dog, aka “The Beast,” in “The Sandlot.” A local baseball team, which plays ball in the sandlot, finds itself in a pickle of epic proportions when Scotty Smalls grabs his stepfather’s valuable baseball and it ends up in the clutches of the beast.
Crazy camp competitions come with the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” and the Baker family. Tom (Steve Martin), and Kate (Bonnie Hunt) and family turn their dream vacation into a competition with the overachieving, overzealous family of Tom’s longtime rival.
Penguin Cody Maverick is about to enter his first pro surf competition in the exciting animated film “Surf’s Up.” On his way to the surf competition, Cody makes a friend and learns about the importance of accepting help from others, especially when you think you have it all figured out.
For some real life surf action, check out the surf documentaries “Endless Summer” or “Blue Crush.” Watch as men and women travel all over the world in search of the perfect wave.
These films plus many others can be found in the Newport Beach Library collection. Come on down to your local library for some summer fun.
