Student racers were ready to rumble Friday at Village View Elementary School in Huntington Beach, where 12 students from three special-education classes competed in the annual Pinewood Derby Championship.

Fourth-grader Arieanna Hewitt snagged first place for the second year in a row. Third-grader Alanah Ketcher was runner-up and kindergartner Noah Waring placed third.

The competition — featuring handmade wooden cars racing on a 32-foot wooden track — is organized by the Huntington Beach chapter of Optimist International and sponsored by the Huntington Beach Auto Dealers Assn.
