Costa Mesa fire Capts. Steve Cathey and Brent Turner received the “Ironman Mike” award Thursday during the Fire & Rescue Department’s annual Recognition Breakfast at the Mesa Verde Country Club.

The award was established last year to honor Costa Mesa fire Capt. Mike Kreza, an 18-year department veteran who died in November 2018 after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Mission Viejo.

The award is given to those “who demonstrate the calling and core values to be like ‘Ironman Mike,’” according to a press release for the event.

Turner also received the Firefighter of the Year award.

  • Community Partner of the Year: George Sakioka
  • Volunteer of the Year: Cindy Brenneman
  • Explorer of the Year: Jay Enciso
  • Team Member of the Year: Larry Grihalva
  • Manager of the Year: Justin Horner and Taylor Voss

“Our 2019 award recipients have clearly demonstrated extraordinary leadership and selfless contributions to the community, to those they serve and to each other, on a level that is absolutely commendable,” said Fire Chief Dan Stefano. “The Costa Mesa fire family is stronger than ever and grateful to serve the community with the highest level of professionalism and compassion every day.”

Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley, Mayor Pro Tem John Stephens and City Manager Lori Ann Farrell Harrison were among the local leaders who attended the event.
