The vice chairman of the OC Fair & Event Center board of directors has resigned, citing family medical issues.

Andreas Meyer had been on the board since December 2018. He said in an email to the Daily Pilot that he would be moving to Kansas at the end of March. He said he hopes to be back.

“It’s been a delight,” Meyer said at the board’s most recent meeting Feb. 27. “I really have enjoyed working with all of you and the great commitment by everybody toward this organization. I wish you all the best.”

In his time on the board, Meyer served on the governance, safety and security and branding project committees. He also was the board member behind the decision last year to raise an LGBTQ pride, or rainbow, flag at the fairgrounds year-round.

The Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa says it is stepping up precautions given the widening outbreak of coronavirus.

“I would like to thank Andreas for his great contribution to OC Fair & Event Center’s board of directors,” fairgrounds Chief Executive Michele Richards said in a statement Tuesday. “He accomplished a lot while he was here, working with the various board committees and helping us move forward with important policy updates. I enjoyed working with Andreas and wish him all the best in the future.”

Applications are open for Meyer’s seat at gov.ca.gov/application-for-appointment. Fair Board spots are appointed by the governor. The state-owned Fair & Event Center is in Costa Mesa.
